The bactrian camel lives in the Gobi Desert, a very dry and arid environment full of sand, wind and drastic temperatures. To help it walk on the sand, the bactrian camel has adapted broad feet with a stretchy layer of elastic tissue. Sandstorms are common in the desert, but bactrian camels have slit-like nostrils that they can seal closed during sandstorms, as well as thick eyebrows to protect their eyes—and even a transparent third eyelid which they can shut to protect their eyes but still see through to know where they are going. Also, in winter it can be very cold but in summer it can be very hot. These creatures have very long and thick hair that they grow for the winter but can shed in the summer. And, to prevent sunburn in the summer when they have shed their coats, the camels have black skin. The desert is also very dry so the bactrian camels have to conserve their water. They do this by concentrating their urine and feces and by storing fat in their humps that can be used for energy whenever they need it.
