Walking on Water

The water strider or gerridae is an unique insect found in calm waters throughout the continental US.  These bugs show an adaptation that allows them to "walk" on water.  Water strider's legs have a set of small hairs which repel water and take in air.  This allows the water strider to stand on the thin membrane of the water's surface and to glide across it.  This adaptation allows the insect to more easily capture their pray.  Using their short, front legs, they can capture and eat insects and larvae stuck on the water's surface.
