Adaptation

The female spotted hyena has a mock penis that is between 7 and 8 inches long. It's mock penis, called a pseudopenis, is caused by the elongation of the clitoris.  In the last stages of pregnancy, alpha female hyenas start pumping testosterone into the fetuses which they are carrying. This large dose of male hormone causes the clitoris and birth canal to enlarge into the false penis, and it also changes the vulva into a fake scrotum. Females urinate, have sexual intercourse, and give birth through their pseudopenis. In a hyena clan, the females are the dominant leaders, and the display of large male genitalia reinforce this relationship. It gives females more power over males, who are hard-wired to reproduce with the females, because their pseudopenis makes reproduction difficult for the males, and they can control when and with who to mate with.
